On of my treasures is a signed Beatles LP. Growing up, The Beatles were the most influential band in my life. Not only did they influence me as a young person, but their impact on the entire world was felt also.
On August 17th 1965, the Beatles were scheduled to play one show at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens. Harold Ballard (owner of the Gardens) sold tickets to two shows and told Beatles manager Brian Epstein the band would have to play twice. Epstein was furious, but agreed. The Beatles performed on one of the hottest days of summer, so Ballard (the scoundrel he was) ordered the start of each show delayed, the thermostats turned up, the water fountains turned off, and the concession stands to only sell large soft drinks/soda pop (a fortune was made on drink sales.)
Old Harold was a con man, and a thief, but thanks to him I got to see The Beatles twice in one day! Mind you, at the first show I was escorted by my Mom (how embarrassing)…but for the second show my cool cousin was my chaperon!
I wish I could re-live that day all over again!
My Father worked for CHUM radio in Toronto back then, and that day he attended The Beatles press conference held at the ‘Hot Stove Lounge’ in Maple Leaf Gardens. I gave my Dad a copy of the Beatles VI album, and asked if he could have the band sign it for me…I still have it to this day, though it’s a little worn out. I guess I should have taken better care of my records when I was a young boy…they were abused…lots of “Show & Tell” at school, etc. Lol.
I began to show a much greater respect/caring for my vinyl when I was about 14 years old I guess….

I also have many other autographed record LP’s…hundreds, literally. One that I really regret selling was my Ramone’s 1st LP (self titled/1976). I had it autographed in around 1978 (when Tommy was in the band)…so it was the still the original lineup at that time. I sold it for $2,200 US at a record show in Calgary Alberta, Canada in 1998…wish I still had it!
*Edit – Wow…Thumbs Down?…maybe I should have kept that Ramone’s LP? Or perhaps the person giving all the TD’s on this page is the person that bought it from me? Yes I know…there was a tad of sibilance at the start of track 1 side 2, but you were aware of that at the time of purchase…”all sales are vinyl”, Lol.
