An former death row inmate who was released after new proof came to light proving his innocence told his story on March 11 in a crowded highschool near San Fransico. He was hoping to spread awareness about false accusations in America today. His name is Kirk Bloodsworth and he was given death for the murder of a girl. He was the first man to be released from death row with the help of DNA evidence.
“This is about real men and real girls whose lives are actually affected by the criminal justice system,” Law Professor Ellen Kreitzberg said.
Kreitzberg and her partner, teacher Tom Hoglund, arranged the afternoon discussion.
Curious students filled the the auditorium, really raring to hear Bloodsworth’s story. Bloodsworth made it clear that no-one is immune to false accusations like those he faced, and that they can spoil the lives of anyone.
“If it can happen to me, it can happen to any one in Palo Alto,” Bloodsworth related. Today hundreds if not thousands of innocent men sit in jails, prisons and Federal Prison Camp. This is not something to turn a blind eye to. This is all too real and we have to accept it and work to modify it.
He was a sports champion in high school and a Marine, and knew of the college due to its famous reputation as a brilliant place for track and field. He graphically described the events in his scandalous prison, the Maryland Penitentiary. Incidents involving sharp weapons, disguised batteries and cockroaches were common for inmates.
“I think I have an obligation in some form to tell you exactly what my life was like,” Bloodsworth said.
These disturbing tales alarmed scholars, but they helped them comprehend the sheer size of what’s happened to Bloodsworth.”All the details made it easier for people to understand,” one teacher said. “He made people see the death penalty through a different light. It is clear that not all death row inmates are guilty. Heck, even many white collar inmates sitting in Federal Prison Camps are not guilty.
Bloodsworth described the humiliation he felt when the courtroom erupted in applause after the guilty decision. It appeared like a very bad dream, like something out if a picture. He was convicted for the savage and disturbing rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl. He blamed the court’s call on his lawyer, who was totally incompetent and completley overworked.
“He was a public defender that had too many cases,” Bloodsworth said.
The tragic story educated the crowd about unlucky facts in the criminal justice system.
“He personified the results of when the system breaks,” maths teacher Jack Bungarden said.
Bloodsworth read over 3,000 books while serving time. He read Joseph Wambaugh’s The Blooding which discussed murders solved in Britain using DNA evidence.
After read Wambaugh’s novel Bloodsworth expounded, “a light went off in my head just like a shot gun. I knew I had come across something that could change my life and get me out of prison.”
A spot of semen on the victim’s clothing contained the secret of who the true killer was. Shortly after Bloodsworth’s enlightenment, his lawyer, Bob Morin, called.
“The DNA is back, Kirk,” Morin related. “You’re innocent! You’re innocent!”
However, the 11 years Bloodsworth spent in prison for a crime he did not commit are 11 years that he can never have back. During those years, his mummy and uncle passed away and his best chum committed suicide.
“Can any of you imagine missing 10 years of your life?” Bloodsworth asked the engaged listeners.
Throughout the display, Bloodsworth stressed that even folks who live in the Palo Alto are as vulnerable to intense fake accusations as anyone.
Describing prison as “a bad place with a lot of truly bad people,” Bloodsworth wished his experience on no one.
