Maxims About Jesus?
Would you be able to consider the following statements about Jesus and honestly reply that Jesus was the one? I cannot understand how much one needs to see the truth if the following is not enough:
1 – According to the Scriptures, streams of living water will flow from within Jesus. (John 7:37,38)
2 – Jesus claimed to be none other than the Creator Himeself.
(John 10:30)
3 – All those who recognized Jesus’ authority would plainly say that he was the Messiah. (Mat. 14:33; 16:16)
4 – Some of the Jews wanted to seize Jesus and stone him for blasphemy. (John 8:31-59)
5 – To the guards unable to arrest Jesus, the Pharisees understood only that they had been deceived by Jesus. (John 7:47)
6 – Jesus was that great light which came from the Galilee. (Mat. 4:16)
7 – Jesus was that stone the builders rejected, which has become the capstone. (Psa. 118:22; Isa. 28:16)
Regarding the first statement, the author of John’s Gospel, being one of Paul’s disciples, was referring to Paul’s writings about his Hellenistic Jesus whom he made his Christ, and was personified in the Nazarene.
With respect to the second statement, Jesus never claimed to be God, and that’s out of question. We must remember that he was Jewish and not Greek, or a Roman Caesar. When he said that he and God were one, he meant to speak as a Jew, representative of God on earth.
Now, about the third statement, many indeed recognized Jesus’ authority while he was living but none said he was the Messiah. I bet you are surprised. Yes, only after Paul started preaching his gospel, people recognized Paul’s authority and according to his message, believed that Jesus was the Messiah.
And for the fourth statement, that some of the Jews wanted to seize Jesus and stone him for blasphemy, you quote John 8:31-59. If you try to read the text without any kind of religious bias, your eyes will be open to the most ridiculous accusation one can make. Now, listen to this: Whom was Jesus talking to? To the Jews who had believed in him. (John 8:31) And these were the Jews who wanted him killed or what? Does it make sense to you? This text should be discarded as a strange narrative of bad taste. Besides, the syle is not Jewish. Probably a Gentile wrote the whole Gospel of John; and most probably a disciple of Paul’s.
And for the fifth statement, there is no basis at all for autheticity. First of all, the Pharisees had no problem at all with Jesus to want to get rid of him. Jesus was a Nazarene, and the Nazarenes were in good terms with the Pharisees. They never sent anyone for the aresting of Jesus, and never referred to him as a deceiver. Every time Pharisees are mentioned in the NT at variance with Jesus, it is usually to reflect Paul’s vindictive attitude against the Pharisees for having been the main obstacle on his way to establish a Christian church in Israel. And as a result of the close relationship between Pharisees and the Nazarenes, some of the Pharisees did embrace the Sect of the Nazarenesl. (Acts 15:5)
Now, for the sixth statement about that great light in the Galilee, you quote Matthew 4:16 and claim it to be Jesus. I believe you have absolutely misunderstood the background to that quotation. First of all, the light did not come from Galilee: it was seen in the Galilee, and not for the fact that Jesus was there, but because the Jews, returning from the Babylonian exile, passed by Galilee, and later settled the region. According to the prophecy, the region was in darkness because it had become the “District of the Gentiles.”
Now, about the last statement about that cornestone which builders rejected, there is no point in the whole of the Scriptures to attribute it to Jesus, but only on the basis of romantic ignorance. The logic to understand this metaphor is found in the dream of Nebuchadnezzar about that huge statue. According to Daniel’s interpretation, every part of the statue is represented by a nation. It’s only obvious that the stone thrown without hand must be a nation. The nation of Israel. Thus, that stone which the builders rejected, which became the capstone of the whole building is Israel, which the empire-builders rejected, and some still do, as unworthy of a place in their worldly plans. That’s the stone that has been
tested in the fire of the Holocaust. (Psalms 118:22; Isa. 28:16)
