Healthcare is one of the topics that most divides opinion in the current age, and if you think back then you will probably remember that it did the same a generation ago, and the same a generation before that. The fact is that as we learn more about the human body, we are able to explain a lot more things that used to appear inexplicable. At the same time, any individual who has been around for a few generations may feel bound to look at a newly-discovered syndrome and think “huh – in my day we used to call that …” and add something that is markedly similar. Whatever one’s views on modern medicine, however, there is a lot of work continually being done to explain and remedy things that go wrong, and this work is highly valuable.
This may mean that tactics and remedies you used on your children when they were young will not be either in vogue today, or even effective for what you may have used them for before. There are many differences between the cures and remedies that we use today and those which we used a generation ago, and so forth. Centuries ago, it was not unusual for doctors in some parts of the world to use leeches in order to stem bleeding, and latterly to use them for several other health complaints. The Black Death, which spread throughout much of the world decimating its population, would have been largely stymied had more modern-minded doctors not been shouted down when they called for innovative treatments. Sometimes progress is for the right reasons.
There are, however, certain aspects of what we “used to” believe still very much in evidence in modern medicine. In order to remain healthy things such as washing one’s hands before eating and after going to the bathroom are still good practice. It kills germs and stops them from getting into our blood stream. If you are taking full care of the child, it is still necessary to take them for check-ups every so often – highly frequent until the age of 18 months and at least once a year thereafter. They also need more shots, more often than your own kids did, several of them before the age of two. And additionally, you may well spend some profitable time reading up on medical developments. Some years ago there was a rumor that the MMR vaccine caused autism, a rumor which took real hold in the UK. It was inaccurate, but the rumor persisted through irresponsible reporting – so it is beneficial to look beyond the headline.
There is one other thing about caring for a child to whom you are a grandparent. There is every chance that, were you to take your grandchild to see the doctor tomorrow, they would turn you away unless you are in possession of a consent form signed by the child’s parents. Ask your own doctor how the rules apply to you – there is exemption if you are now the child’s legal guardian, for example. Certainly, though, things are not as straightforward as once they were.
