Portrait Photo

Early photography was performed by painters who made a living out of doing portraits. Photography to them was a new technique where they could re-use their skills in composing an image. For a long time cameras were held on a tripod and the operator would precisely frame the picture even though it was showing upside down.
Would it be that the lack of colour forces the mind to appreciate a good composition instead?
The only place in our world where vision occurs in black & white is at night or in poorly lit conditions like in a cave. Therefore mentally black & white may be associated with unease or fear.
Black & white gives an image a unique level of abstraction. Your eye never operates independently of your mind. A smooth graduation in the levels of grey is quite suggestive in expressing volume or even temperature. In the days of chemical darkrooms the operator would mask some parts of the negative to give more time for some rich scales of shades to appear in the highlighted areas.
A black & white portrait always has more stature than the same image in colour. Yet again the portrait of a child is better in colour unless your focus is on the plight of the orphan, the poor or the sick. A black & white portrait of a woman forces you to concentrate on her stare as the makeup has a lesser impact. Looking into someone’s eyes is a gateway into looking into their soul. Black & white portraits have this uncanny effect.
The removal of colour in landscape and still-life has a dramatic impact. The canopy of trees becomes quickly a silhouette. A grey sky implies rain or worse thunderstorm even if the image was taken on a bright sunny day. Still objects contend with one another with shapes and beams of light.
Photography has the ability to suspend life out of time but this is even more so in black & white. It is only recently that newspapers are printed in colour. Photo journalism has established a long tradition of leaders and celebrities which provide instant recognition of their features precisely because those images are etched in our memory in black & white.

A Great Day in Harlem $12.69 And what a day it was: nearly 60 jazz musicians, gathered on a Harlem street one morning in 1958 for what photographer Art Kane rightly, if immodestly, calls “the greatest picture of that era of musicians ever taken” (incredibly, it was also Kane’s first professional shoot). Like Ken Burns’s Jazz, this 60-minute documentary, an Oscar nominee in 1995, is a mixed-media affair: still photographs and … |
