Has anyone purchased an A-ROD game used bat, glove, etc. that does not appear to be game…?

I purchased an A-ROD signed/inscribed “game used” Old Hickory bat that included an LOA from A-ROD stating that it is game used. The bat also has his tamper proof seal affixed to it. The problem I have is that the bat does not appear to have any ball or cleat marks on it. And this is the opinion of several people. I would appreciate any recommendation on how I should resolve this issue.
You may have purchased “game used” items that were indeed used in a game even though they don’t look like it. Before getting a real job about 20 years ago, I was a card and sports memorabilia dealer and pretty much know all the in’s and out’s about the “game used” stuff, and I hope this doesn’t disappoint you too much. But you asked…..
More often than not, the items appeared in a game, but….. For example, you might purchase a “game worn” jersey that was actually worn in a game – for all of 1/2 of an inning. Many players will change jerseys every half inning so that they can say they were “game worn” and technically they were, even though the player never wore it long enough to work up a sweat. With regards to the bat you purchased, A-Rod could have “used” it in a game – one at bat. And perhaps during that at bat, he never so much as hit a foul ball – struck out swinging, looked at 3 strikes or walked. Technically, since he took it to the plate with him, it is “game used” even though as soon as the bat boy picked it up, it was out of commission and went into a special bin or box where it sat the rest of the game along with the others he “used” during the same game. Or, and this won’t make you feel good (sorry) it could have come from Spring Training and he had a bunch of them and switched bats after every pitch – but nonetheless, it was technically, “game used.”
Look at the meat end of the bat and see if it has any markings such as ground-in dirt particles at the very end. There is a possibility that he at least tapped the end on the ground….any abrasions at all or does it look like it just came out of the factory?
While the bat may be genuine and have been “game used” it obviously didn’t see much action. If it saw any. I don’t think A-Rod would risk his reputation in passing off something as “game used” that really wasn’t. It just didn’t see much use is all.
One of my favorite “game used” scams in addition to the jerseys mentioned earlier, are “game used” balls from a perfect game or no-hitter. In the later innings, have you ever noticed how many balls a pitcher will reject for one reason or another? Even though the ball may be autographed, and was used by the opposing pitcher, its from the perfect game/no-hitter so technically, they aren’t putting a fast one over on people although it does tend to stretch the truth more than just a little. As for Certificates of Authenticity, those are a dime a dozen and unless they’re notarized, aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. At least you have a Letter which I assume was signed by A-Rod which is a little better.
One last thing on the jersey scam since its one of my favorites – when Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb’s all-time hit record, he would wear a jersey during the home half of an inning for one batter and then change it, going through as many as he could. There are tons of those on the marketplace!!
When you’re buying something like a “game used” item, its always best to be able to see it before purchasing it; caveat emptor – let the buyer beware.
